The Lost Squadron

This is an amazing article about WW2 aircraft that landed in Greenland and then for the next 48-50 or so years were buried with a massive amount of snow and ice.

The 6 'lost' airplanes were P-38 Lightening aircraft.

How did this happen? you ask.

And what to you mean they were buried in ice and snow?

Well, this short but very interesting article will explain.

And it will also provide important insight into ice cores and the ages they supposedly tell us.

ARRL Field Day is Today (Saturday) and Sunday

The Hams (Amateur Radio Operators) pictured here are participaeting in the annual Field Day event which begins today and ends tomorrow.

What is Field Day? you ask.

Well, it is that very special time of the year, which always happens on the last full weekend in June, when over 35,000 Hams in the US and Canada participate in a contest to contact as many people around the country and around the world as possible. 

It is also an emergency preparedness exercise in which Hams go on the air for 24 round the clock hours using only battery, solar, or generator power instead of the usual plug in the wall commercial power.

Why?

Basically because it is a good way to test their equipment -- since this is usually how they have to operate during disasters, floods, hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, and other events when commercial power is down.

During disasters Hams set up portable antennas, power up their radios, and go on the air to help the police, firemen, rescue squads, search teams, etc.

So Field Day is a good time to check and see if 'all systems are go'.

If you are a Ham you already know about Field Day and are likely participating.

But if you are not a Ham (Amateur Radio Operator) you are invited to attend the Field Day nearest you. You will be welcomed with open arms and will be shown what is happening. In so doing, hopefully you will catch the 'bug' and become a Ham.

There will also usually be a GOTA (Get on the Air) station to let non hams Get On The Air and experience the excitement of talking on the radio.

For those who can't attend a Field Day in person but have a Short Wave radio, you might hear some of the activity as you tune the dial.

Hint: The Bands on which you are most likely to 'find/hear' the Hams will be 40, 20, 15, 10, 6, and 2 meters as well as the 70 CM band.

In Tennessee, the Chattanooga Ham Club will begin setting up the Antennas, Radios, etc. Saturday Morning and will go On the Air at 2 PM EST.  The 24 hours end at 2 PM EST on Sunday.

But don't just sit by your Shortwave radio, go to one of the thousands of sites that will be up and running in the US and Canada.  You don't have to stay all 24 hours but do drop in and see what is going on.  You will be amazed.

Ancient Man and OOPS

Yesterday we read about the 'discovery' of a very old computer.

How old?  Well, before the time of Christ.

It was a mechanical device that was helpful in determining locations of ships while at sea, a star chart, and more.

And all that was possible over 2000 years ago.

But that ancient computer is not the only amazing and 'advanced' item that has been found from the ancient past.

The world's oldest computer?

Recently a friend of DIT sent us a link to a contemporary article about 'the world's oldest computer'.

It was interesting to read the article (to which we will be linking today)

but, believe it or not, this is really not a new finding of an old artifact.

What do you mean?

Well, I had read about this previously in a book (to which we will be referencing in tomorrow's DIT).

It was described in the book, much as it is in the article,

and in the book, it was referred to as an OOPS (Out Of Place Artifact).

Summer begins today

Well, you could have fooled me as it has been hot and like summer here for quite a while.

But, yes, technically, summer did not begin until today.

How do we know when it is summer?

Today is Father's Day

Another special day has rolled around.

In May, we celebrated Mother's Day and folks wore roses (red or white) to celebrate that day and their mothers.

And, of course, the mothers also got gifts -- lots of gifts such as chocolate, jewelry, etc.

Also, of course, most families took their mothers out to eat for the big day.

But for Father's day -- hmmmm. No roses.   What to do?

So folks buy ties, tools, and other such things for their fathers.

And instead of taking the fathers out to eat, they hand him a platter of raw  hamburgers, hotdogs, and steaks and send him outside in the heat to cook them on the grill.

There might be something wrong with this picture.   : )

Anyway, today IS Father's day.

And those of you who are out of town and far far away from your father and unable to be present for the goodies he will be grilling -- well, you should at least call him on the phone.

Or you could send him a text message.

Or an email.

Or whatever.

But do get in touch with your dad today and let him know how much you appreciate him.

For those who no longer have dads -- spend sometime today reflecting on your dad and appreciating what he did for you.

Today is Flag Day

Flag Day in the United States commemorates the adoption of the U.S. flag by the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777.

It was also the Birthday of the late father of one of the friends of this ministry.

And that ‘factoid’ always helps me remember Flag Day.

Benjamin Franklin Flies his kite

Kites are not new.  They have been around and flown for millennia.

According to Wikipedia, the first kites were invented in China in the 5th Century BC.

So, when Ben Franklin flew his kite it was not the kite that was famous but what he discovered.

Tradition says that on June 10, 1752 Benjamin Franklin flew his kite and demonstrated the electrical nature of lightning.

But maybe he did or maybe he didn't make the discovery --

According to Wikipedia "In 1750 Benjamin Franklin published a proposal for an experiment to prove that lightning was caused by electricity by flying a kite in a storm that appeared capable of becoming a lightning storm. "

"It is not known whether Franklin ever performed his experiment,"

"but on May 10, 1752, Thomas-François Dalibard of France conducted a similar experiment using a 40 feet (12 m) iron rod instead of a kite and extracted electrical sparks from a cloud."
So, perhaps Franklin confirmed the results of Dalibard --

or more likely, Franklin didn't know that Dalibard had already done it a month earlier.

After all they were an ocean apart and news in those days didn't travel fast.

Anyway, according to tradition, it was on this day in 1752 (or maybe a month earlier) when it was discovered that lightning was caused by electricity.

Just thought you would want to know.

Today is National Donut Day

What Must I Do to be Saved?

This is not only sad -- but the consequences are now being seen in society and the world views of folks everywhere.

When the Bible is removed from a persons's life --a serious vacuum ensues which becomes filled with non-Biblical thoughts, mores, standards, desires, etc.

With time (and it takes only a short span of time) everything changes.

As you read this brief article, you will begin to understand the etiology / underlying cause of many of the problems facing the world and society today.

First Nonstop Flight from New York to Paris

Today is the anniversary of another important historical event.

On May 21, 1927 Charles Lindberg made the first solo, non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean.  He was 25 years old.

This was also the first ever nonstop flight from New York to Paris.

As you know, in 1927, flying was still in its early stages and long distance solo flights such as this were things to 'dream of'.

His flight took 33 ½ hours ! And, remember, he was flying solo. No Co-Pilot. No Navigator.

But adventurous aviators, such as Charles Lindberg, were paving the way for flights that today are no longer solo but in huge multi-passenger planes.

Here are excerpts from a Wikipedia article which detail the flight:

"Six well-known aviators had already lost their lives in pursuit of the Orteig Prize when Lindbergh took off from Roosevelt Field on his successful attempt in the early morning of Friday, May 20, 1927. 

"Prior to fueling The Spirit, Lindbergh's crew had strained and restrained the Shell Aviation fuel to eliminate as much sediment as possible. This was to prevent any fuel line blockages during the flight.

"Burdened by its heavy load of 450 U.S. gallons (1,704 liters) of gasoline weighing about 2,710 lb (1,230 kg), and hampered by a muddy, rain-soaked runway, Lindbergh's Wright Whirlwind-powered monoplane gained speed very slowly as it made its 7:52 am (07:52) takeoff run, but its J-5C radial engine still proved powerful enough to allow the Spirit to clear the telephone lines at the far end of the field "by about twenty feet [six meters] with a fair reserve of flying speed".

 "Over the next 33.5 hours, he and the Spirit—which Lindbergh always jointly referred to as "WE"—faced many challenges, including skimming over both storm clouds at 10,000 ft (3,000 m) and wave tops at as low at 10 ft (3.0 m), fighting icing, flying blind through fog for several hours, and navigating only by the stars (whenever visible), and dead reckoning before landing at Le Bourget Airport at 10:22 pm (22:22) on Saturday, May 21. 

"The airfield was not marked on his map and Lindbergh knew only that it was some seven miles northeast of the city. He initially mistook the airfield for some large industrial complex with bright lights spreading out in all directions. The lights were, in fact, the headlights of tens of thousands of cars all driven by eager spectators now caught in "the largest traffic jam in Parisian history."

"A crowd estimated at 150,000 spectators stormed the field, dragged Lindbergh out of the cockpit, and literally carried him around above their heads for "nearly half an hour". While some damage was done to the Spirit (especially to the fine linen, silver-painted fabric covering on the fuselage) by souvenir hunters, both Lindbergh and the Spirit were eventually "rescued" from the mob by a group of French military fliers, soldiers, and police, who took them both to safety in a nearby hangar.

From that moment on, life would never again be the same for the previously little-known former U.S. Air Mail pilot who, by his successful flight, had achieved virtually instantaneous—and lifelong—world fame."

Mount St. Helens

On this date, May 18 at 8:32 AM Pacific Time in 1980, Mt. St. Helens erupted.

To the Millenials and many other groups of 'young folks', this is probably just a blip on the radar in their History books (if it is even mentioned at all).

But, it was a big and serious event with very significant consequences.

Anthem: Worthy is the Lamb and Amen

Today's Anthem is not only a classic and a very very beloved portion of Handel's Messiah,

It is also exceedingly difficult to sing -- especially the Amen Part.

Those of you who have been fortunate enough to participate in singing Handel's Messiah know how hard it is to sing the AMEN portion.

In fact, it is so difficult that most Choirs just 'conveniently' omit it.

Today, however, you will not only hear it

but the music with words and notes are provided

so you can sing or hum along with the Choir.

1948 Israel established in one Day

And while we are 'into' Historical events -- as you know, a more recent establishment of a nation took place on this date -- May 14, 1948.

Some readers of DIT were alive at the time and recall the amazing event.

For others this is likely new information.

It was on May 14, 1948 that Israel became a nation after approximately 2000 years of exile.

It happened in a day -- Just as the Bible had predicted in Isaiah 66:8

On this day, May 13, 1607 --One hundred Colonists arrived on the west bank of the James River in Virginia.

They founded Jamestown -- and from this early colonization and subsequent arrivals of others -- the United States of America was ultimately established in 1776 with the Declaration of Independence.

But today is the anniversary of when it all began.

Yes, Today is a very momentous day in the history of America.

Noah's Ark is in Kentucky !

Here is a great idea for a summer vacation adventure --

Or for a trip at any time of the year.

What is it?

Well, a Life Size replica of Noah's Ark is being built and will be ready for viewing and visiting July 7 of this year.

So, we are posting this information now so you can begin to make plans for a visit.

As you can see from the picture here, it is definitely not a little boat with animals sticking their necks out of windows as is so often pictured in children's books. 

This is definitely a 'must see'
