What does SOS stand for?

This is another interesting factoid sent by a friend via email.  Thanks Friend.

On the surface, I guess the thought had not occurred to me about what the letters SOS meant, having always always just considered it to be a distress signal that was easy to remember even if one did not know morse code.

The dit dit dit DAH DAH DHA dit dit dit  sound is easy to remember, write (... ___ ...) , and to send even by a novice.

But what does it mean?  Hmmm.  Good question.

This is definitely a “curious minds want to know” question.

And two links will give us the answer.

The first link was sent by the friend in the email.  HERE’S THAT LINK

And, for those who want more details and to hear an audio of what the signal actually sounds like, HERE’S THE LINK
