Hymn: Nothing but the Blood

Our Hymn today builds upon our devotional thought of yesterday.

What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

O precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow
No other fount I know
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

For my pardon this I seek
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
For my cleansing this my plea
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

This is all my hope and peace
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
This is all my righteousness
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

O precious is the flow
that makes me white as snow
No other fount I know
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Those are the words, Now HERE'S THE LINK

Life in the Blood

"For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul."
                                           Leviticus 17:11

This is a very profound verse.

For a short but powerful explanation of why it is so important and profound, HERE'S THE LINK

Today is Valentine's Day

Today is Valentine’s day !

In America, many folks celebrate this day with Cards, Flowers (Roses, Bouquets, etc.), Chocolates, Jewelry, and even proposals of Marriage.

But, believe it or not, this is not just an American Holiday.

In Finland, for example, it is known as “Friend’s Day”

and in Guatemala it is known as “Day of Love and Friendship.”

And doubtless many other countries also celebrate this day.

But regardless of where you are -- Happy Valentines day.

Katie has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge

This morning Katie the Toy Poodle crossed over the Rainbow Bridge.

Born in 2001, she was 15 years old (which is 105 in dog years).

Beloved by many DIT'ers, and especially by me, She will be be sorely missed as you can well imagine.

She had a long, full, and adventurous life but in this past year old age finally began to take its toll.

She was having difficulties hearing, was almost blind, had trouble walking and, well, she was just getting tired and life wasn't fun anymore.

So, sadly, it was time for her to take the journey over the Rainbow Bridge.

The two pictures below depict the event.

Goodbye Katie. You will be missed and will always be in my / our hearts and memories.

Why shouldn't people accept millions of years?

You have no doubt noticed that many DIT entries are related to the young earth vs old earth controversy.

By this we mean:

Young Earth refers to the literal Biblical teaching of Creation by God a few thousand years ago.

Old Earth refers to the Evolutionary theory of big bang, billions of years, and other variations on the 'theme' including several Christian Compromise ideas such as Day Age Theory, Gap Theory, and Theistic evolution.

But, why is this important?

What difference does it make?

Well, a very good article explains.

HERE'S THE LINK to why shouldn't we aceept millions of years

Hymn: When I survey the Wondrous Cross

Earlier this week Yom Kippur was celebrated.

As you will recall, Yom Kippur, the Jewish Feast Day of Atonement, was observed annually in the Old Testament Times by the sacrifice of a Lamb.

The sacrifice was for the purpose of atoning for the sins of the people.

But, an annual lamb sacrifice was unable to provide complete and total forever sacrifice -- rather it was a picture of the coming one time for all perfect sacrifice

and that was the sacrifice of the Lord God Jesus Christ, who came to earth to become the perfect sinless Lamb of God.

He died on Calvary, as the Lamb of God, that had been pictured for centuries and centuries in the annual observance of Yom Kippur.

The final perfect atoning sacrifice was made when the Lord God Jesus Christ died on the cross at Calvary --

Why did He die?

He died to pay the death penalty of all mankind forever --

Today's Hymn tells what this accomplished, why, and how we should individually respond.

Iceland is Beautiful

Yesterday we discovered that letters can get to their destination in Iceland using a map for an address.

Recently several DITers visited Iceland.

And they agreed that the country, though large, did not have an abundance of people -- so that a letter with a map would probably work.

They also noted that Iceland is a beautiful place -- as indicated in the picture above of one of the many waterfalls in Iceland (this photo was taken by one of the DITers.)

Then another DITer found a link to a site that has a bunch of beautiful photos of Iceland.

Would you like to see them?   Thought you would -- so

A letter with only a map for an address

Yes, no kidding.

A friend of DIT found today's very interesting link.

What is it?

Well, it seems that a letter was sent to a person in Iceland but without the usual street and town address.

It just had a picture of a map!

And it arrived.

Yes, Iceland is a big country but it doesn't have a zillion folks.  So believe it or not, the letter arrived.

Would you like to see the envelope and the map?

Thought you would.

So HERE'S THE LINK to a letter with only a map for an address

Today is Yom Kippur

Yom Kippur, also known as the Day of Atonement, is the most solemn and most Holy day on the Jewish calendar.

Interestingly it is another Jewish holiday that ends with one long blast on the Shofar.

In the Old Testament Yom Kipper was observed annually by the sacrifice of a perfect Lamb whose blood atoned for the sins committed by the people of the Jewish nation in the preceding year.

But the death sacrifice of a perfect Lamb each Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) was not sufficient to fulfill the the death penalty for all sins for all people for all time.

It was only a picture of the coming future complete and final payment for sins.

It pictured the future sacrifice of a once and only perfect sacrifice to pay the death penalty for anyone -- Jew and non-Jew -- who would accept that free gift of the substitute death.

In the first Century, The Lord God Jesus Christ came to earth as the Lamb of God,  the perfect and final sacrifice.

Jesus' sinless life made him the perfect Lamb.

Jesus' sacrificial death as the Lamb of God provided the final and perfect atonement.

Jesus' resurrection 3 days later proved He was God, the Lamb of God, and the accepted atoning sacrifice.

Jesus' sacrifice was payment for all sins of all mankind and provides salvation for anyone who believes and accepts His atoning sacrifice.

Anyone can accept the free gift of salvation made available by Jesus, the perfect Lamb of God.

And it is essential that everyone personally and individually accept this free gift

Because --

There is no other way unto salvation except through Jesus Christ.

Our link today is to the Hymn, At Calvary, which tells how Christ's death atones for my and your sins.

Today is Columbus Day

For the 'historically challenged' this day is only another holiday, another time to get off work or get out of school.

Indeed, not much is taught about Christopher Columbus anymore.

You probably know that he is credited with the discovery in 1492 of the hemisphere in which America is located.

You probably also have heard the quote "in 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue"

You might even remember that his 3 ships were the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria (pictured here)

But that is probably about all most people know.

So, today, we are providing a link that will help fill in some of the gaps of Columbus day and Christopher Columbus.

Amazon Fulfillment Warehouse

You have probably ordered something from Amazon.

And it probably arrived reallllly fast.

But, have you ever wondered what the inside of an Amazon Warehouse looks like and how your order was filled so rapidly?

Well, today I drove by the outside of an Amazon Warehouse.

It was huge -- and went on and on and on.

And I wondered, hmmmmm, what goes on inside an Amazon warehouse.

A friend works in one but her description doesn't do it justice -- though she says she walks many miles every day --

The brief video to which we are linking today will give you a better picture of what goes on in an Amazon Fulfillment Center and why she walks so many miles every day.

How Could Noah Build the Ark

Yesterday we considered the question of whether or not there was a real historical person named Noah and if there was a real world wide flood.

So, your next logical question would be (assuming you now believe that Noah and the Flood are real)

How could Noah actually build an Ark !!!

The article to which we are linking today explains.

Was there really a Noah's Ark and Flood?

Recently I watched a video (which we will soon post for you to view also)

in which, among other things, folks were asked if they believed if there had been a literal Noah and a literal flood.

As you might surmise, most said NO.

Is this important? you ask.

Well, the article to which we are linking today will provide interesting and important information about this topic.

Rosh Hashanah is today and tomorrow

Rosh Hashanah began at sundown yesterday and ends at sundown on Tuesday.

What is Rosh Hashanah and why 2 days?

It is the beginning  of the Jewish New Year and, according to Jewish tradition, as indicated on the chabad website: "the anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve, and a day of judgment and coronation of G-d as King"

The reason for the 2 days (some say Oct 3 and 4 this year and others say October 2-4) is because the day on the Jewish calendar begins and ends at sundown (instead of at midnight on the calendar of the rest of the world).

So, Rosh Hashanah is First Day of the Jewish New Year and is also known as "The Feast of Trumpets"

This Holiday covers two days since the exact time it begins is based on when the first sliver of the New Moon is sighted.

Even though it is shown on the calendar to begin this year at Sundown today and extend through sundown tomorrow, IF the New Moon is not seen today, then the day will be observed tomorrow beginning at sundown and extending through the next day.

So we are leaving this DIT up for 2 days since one is not exactly sure when it will be observed.

In fact, this is the ONLY Jewish Holiday that 'no one knows for sure when it will begin'.   Hmmmm.  Does this ring a bell in your thought process?

Also, leaving this DIT up for two days will give you time to hear the Shofar sounds and read the wonderful summary article explaining about this very important time of Celebration for Jews and Christians.

Christians? Why is a Jewish Holiday important to Christians?

Well, when you read the article you will find out.

So, with that said, HERE'S THE LINK to Rosh Hashanah The Feast of Trumpets.

And to hear the actual Shofar sounds of Rosh Hashanna HERE'S THE LINK.

5 Surprising things your Smartphone can do

A couple of years ago my smartphone became dumb (i.e. quit working)

so I had to get another.

And talk about smart !!!

This phone was sooooooo smart that I bought a 300+ page book to figure out how to use it.

And, the interesting thing is that instructions on how to use the Phone to actually call someone didn't appear until page 100.  I kid you not.

So smart phones are realllllly smart and getting smarter every day.

Suitcases have come a long way --

From big trunks on stage coaches and overseas voyages

to hand held suitcases

then to rolling suitcases on 2 wheels such as the one pictured here

and then to the 4 wheeled rolling suitcases

which most folks thought was surely the final evolution of the suitcase --

But wait !!!

Yes, it gets even better -- there has been another leap in the evolution of the suitcase !!!

What is it ??? you ask

Well, now we have a suitcase you can ride !!!!

Yes, no kidding -- this seems to be the next step in suitcase development

and if it were not so expensive I would want one now.

Computers Unroll and Decipher Scroll

A friend of DIT found this very interesting and unusual article.

What now? you ask

Well it seems that a badly burnt scroll was found but was so badly burned that everyone was afraid to try to unroll it.

It was not a beautiful, easy to unroll and read scroll such as the one pictured here of the Book of Esther.

No -- it was so badly burned and damaged that even touching it could likely totally destroy it.

So, What to do?

Well, believe it or not -- a way was found

A most unusual way.

Antikythera Mechanism and Human Skeleton

On Monday, May 11, 2009 we posted a DIT about the Antikythera mechanism.

What was it?

It was described by Donald Chittick in his Book, The Ancient Puzzle of Man (pictured here) as

“an analog computing device or ‘computer’ (that) was recovered from a ship which had sunk in the Aegean Sea in the first century B.C. ...”

To read more about and see a picture of this ancient computer HERE'S THE LINK

But the reason we are mentioning it again is because there has been additional information about another discovery related to this Antikythera mechanism.

What is it?

Well, it seems that skeletal remains of at least one sailor, who went down with the ship carrying this unusual OOPA (Out Of Place Artifact),have been found.

Yellow Lines on the TV football field

It is saturday and time for all those many college football games

and you are likely lined up on a couch or at a friend's house or somewhere watching the games on TV --

And doubtless you have noticed that, in addition to the normal white lines marking off each 10 yard segment, there is a Yellow Line (and often other lines) added to the TV screen to help you know where the key points of the play are to take place.

These additional lines are not on the field in 'real life' as those of you who go to the games in person have noticed.

But they are on the TV version and are really helpful.

So, how do these lines get there?  What is the science behind them?

A friend of DIT found this video which explains how it is done. Thanks friend.

Autumn begins

Wow, how time flies.  Fall is already here and it seems like the year has just begun.

So what is so important about Autumn? you ask.

Well, it means that today is the day that Summer officially ends and Fall begins.

The 'fancy' name for this event is "The Fall Autumnal Equinox."

So what is the Fall Autumnal Equinox and why is it important?

Well, for one thing, it is that special day at the end of summer and the beginning of fall when the sun at the equator rises in the due East and sets in the due West.

This means that both the day and the night are about 12 hours long.

The reason why they are not exactly 12 hours each is explained in the article below.

But, more significantly, to those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, the days will now start getting shorter and shorter as each day passes and the nights will get longer and longer and longer ....

Until we come to the Winter Solstice when the shortest day of the year occurs.

But that is then and this is now.

And today is the Fall Autumnal Equinox.

To read more about the Equinoxes and view a really informative 2 min 38 second video from National Geographic, which they posted for the 2009 equinox,  but same concepts apply every year including this year,

Hymn: Praise to the Lord, the Almighty

Today's Hymn is one of Worship and Praise to the Lord God.

Written in the 1600s, it contains words of worship to the powerful, mighty, loving, one and only Creator God of the Universe.

HERE'S THE LINK to Praise to the Lord, the Almighty

Praise to the Lord, the almighty, the King of creations;
O my soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation:
All ye who hear,
Now to his temple draw near,
Joining in glad adoration.

Praise to the Lord, who o'er all things so wondrously reigneth,
Shieldeth thee gently from harm, or when fainting sustaineth:
Hast thou not seen
How thy heart's wishes have been
Granted in what he ordaineth?

Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee;
Surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend thee:
Ponder anew
What the Almighty can do,
If to the end he befriend thee.

Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him!
All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before him!
Let the Amen
Sound from his people again:
Gladly for ay we adore him.

Tomorrow is Grandparent's Day

Grandparents day has been observed in the US on the First Sunday after Labor Day since 1978.

According to Wikipedia there is even a special flower for Grandparents.

What is it?  Well, it is the flower pictured here and it is appropriately named "Forget Me Nots."

Today's DIT is to remind you that tomorrow is the day to 'honor' those of you who are grandparents and to bring a smile to those that aren't.

Either way, the email which I recently received about grandparents, and which has probably gone around the internet a zillion times already, was new to me.

I have no idea who wrote this but they certainly know their 'facts'.

So, without further ado, check out this information about a very special 'Answering Machine' that Grandparents have or wish they have plus some very interesting facts about grandparents as related by their grandchildren.

The Geological Column

This picture of the Grand Canyon was taken by a good friend of DIT and it vividly shows the many layers.

Usually when you see pictures of the many layers of the Grand Canyon you are told that they were laid down over millions and millions of years.

But, have you considered that they are actually evidence of the worldwide Flood of Noah?

Today we are posting a link to an article (actually it is Chapter 6 in the Book: Evolution Exposed).

This article gives important information about the layers in the Grand Canyon as well as the same or similar layers seen in many other areas of the world.

These layers are part of what as known as "The Geologic Column".

So you ask: What is the "Geologic Column"?

Well, as explained in the article,  the Geologic Column is a "graphic representation of the layers of rock that make up the earth's crust."

After reading this, you will likely look again when you see the layers in the Grand Canyon, other canyons, and in the ever the ubiquitous road cuts all over the world.
