Today is Pentecost Sunday

What is Pentecost Sunday?

It is a special Jewish and now also Christian holiday that occurs 50 days (penta = 50) after Passover.

How and why are these two holidays related?

The Old Testament tells about Passover, observed annually, which commemorates the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt after about 400 years of living in Egypt, most of that time in slavery. To read about this, HERE'S THE LINK

In the New Testament we learn that it was also on Passover that The Lord God Jesus Christ was crucified, as fulfilment of the picture of the sacrificial lamb of Passover and the other Jewish days and holidays, to pay the sin death penalty for mankind.

50 Days after the Exodus described in the Old Testament and the Death of Jesus described in the New Testament Pentecost ocurs.

In The Old Testament on Pentecost, The 10 Commandments were given by God on Mount Sinai to Moses and the Israelites / Jews.

But something very special and related to Christians also occurred on the Pentecost that happened 50 days after the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Because of that special happening, this day is no longer celebrated only because of the giving of the 10 Commandments.

It is now also celebrated because that day is now considered to be the day that the birth of the Christian Church occurred.

The amazing event on that particular and special Pentecost is described in Chapter 2 of the New Testament Book of Acts.

To read that passage, HERE' S THE LINK

And last but not least, our Hymn for today is Pentecostal Power.  This Hymn may be new to you but the words are provided.

Today is Memorial Day

Is your flag flying?

Why should it be flying? you ask.

Because it's Memorial Day!

“Old Folks” understand the meaning and the why of Memorial Day but, alas, I fear that most “young folks” today think it is just another 3 day holiday and a time for fun.

But is it? Should we look at it as just another occasion for cookouts, the opening of swimming pools, the beginning of summer vacations, and goofing off?

I remember my Parents and Grandparents putting flowers and flags on graves (of military and family) and referring to this special day as “Decoration Day”, its original name. The name was changed to Memorial Day after World War I, but they still referred to it as Decoration Day.

So, what exactly IS Decoration Day / Memorial day and why do we observe it?

The opening paragraph in Wikipedia says:

“Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War (it is celebrated near the day of reunification after the civil war), it was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action.

So, Memorial day is a special time to remember the cost of Freedom.

This video will further explain. Be sure your sound is on.

There is a fountain filled with Blood

Today's Hymn tells about the Blood of Jesus,

which was the price He paid to redeem (save) those who trust in Him as God and Savior.

A blood (i.e. death) sacrifice is required

because without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sin.

Jesus provided His own death (blood sacrifice) on the cross

as the payment for the sins of anyone who trusts in Him

and

accepts His substitute sacrifice

in place of the death penalty he or she will have to personally pay

if they do not accept His sacrificial gift of salvation.
