Ancient Civilizations -- what did they know?

Textbooks and our culture (movies, magazines, TV programs, etc etc etc) today teach that ancient man evolved -- and present a 'tree' of evolutionary ancestors including monkeys and apes.

But is this accurate?

Do the known historical accounts of ancient Civilizations confirm this?

Or did some of those Ancient Civilizations have inventions and technology that often parallels and even surpasses what man of the 20th and 21st Centuries can do?
