You know the theory -- first there was nothing and then that nothing exploded and eventually formed everything -- stars, planets, earth, rocks, people, etc.

Several? I thought there was only the one you just outlined.
Well, originally, of course, there was that original big bang theory.
But, alas and alack, it had to be modified because it didn't line up with observed facts.
Then that variation had to be modified again for same reason.
And on and on this changing story went.
