Birds of Paradise

Pictured here is the 'Wilson's Bird of Paradise'. It was taken by Doug Janson and posted on Wikipedia.

This is just one of many of these beautiful, ornate, and extremely rare Birds.

An Ornithologist and his photographer traveled into the wilderness of New Guinea to photograph them in detail.

Not unexpectedly, however, they are amazed at their beauty but

as seen through their 'eyes' of 'old earthers'  (Evolutionists) they think these beautiful birds just happened by chance.

'Old earther's' can NOT explain them or how and why they came to be so awesomely beautiful other than 'it just happened".

They call it "the miracle of evolution."

But, if you believe in the Creator God, the explanation is simple and easy --

God Created them this way.

As you view this video, ask yourself -- Did these birds just 'happen by chance of evolution' ?

Or were they designed and created by the Creator God.

But, for one last look at Olympic Sports events

here is a brief video of one of the most amazing sports of all.

What is it?

It is "Cat Curling"

My Hope is in the Lord

The music today is not technically a Hymn per se but it has a message that everyone understands and appreciates.

Why was it chosen?

Well,

many folks have family members, friends, or perhaps even personally who are undergoing crises, problems, serious health issues, or even cancer.

This song, based on the experiences of Job has a message that will encourage and comfort those folks.

It also helps provide a foundation for how to respond to whatever might come in the future.

No electricity? How to heat a small room

Many folks in North America have been experiencing really  cold weather for the past couple of months.

And sadly many have lost power and have been realllllly cold.

Interestingly a friend who lives in a warm tropical climate that probably never sees snow or ice sent us a link to

How to heat a small room when you have no electricity

So how is this done?

Well, believe it or not, the 'secret' is 'tea candles' - aka 'tea lights'.

Yes those little tiny candles that are used for decorations.

How can they possibly help? you ask.

Well a brief video explains and demonstrates how to do this.

HERE'S THE LINK to 'how to easily heat your home using flower pots and tea lights.

Not All Thieves are Stupid

Recently we received an email warning us about some new and clever ways for thieves and robbers to get your 'stuff'.

Likely if you check this out on one of the 'check it out' sites, you will be told that this email is a fake.

But, whether it is fake or not

clever thieves and robbers could well utilize these simple ways to take your things.

So, with that by way of a caveat and warning,

Bald Eagle Nesting Webcam

Recently while chatting with a friend we learned that there is an awesome web cam of a Bald Eagle nesting with two eggs.

Seems that the Eagle parents have returned to a location they have visited previously and cameras were set up in anticipation of their return.

Were? and How can I see this?  you ask

The Eagles are nesting at Berry College in Rome, Georgia.

Currently the mother Eagle is sitting in the nest with two still unhatched eggs.

You will want to put the link into your favorites and check back from time to time

because

soon the eggs will hatch and you will be able to watch the baby eaglets grow and develop.

It will take a little while for the page to load and the camera to come up.

Be patient.  It will be worth the wait.

So with that said

Mr Bean Olympics Opening Ceremony Music

The Olympics continue in Sochi Russia and

the Opening Ceremonies probably seem like they were ages ago as so much has happened since then.

And -- speaking of opening ceremonies, surely you remember the wonderful spoof by Mr. Bean and the Orchestra at the 2012 Olympics.

Whether you have seen this before or if you have missed it, you will love this musical Opening Ceremony music by Mr. Bean and the Orchestra.

Since the Olympics are still underway, this seems appropriate for a DIT.

Language Families and the Tower of Babel

Watching the Olympics reminds us that there are many many different languages.

In Genesis Chapter 10, the Table of Nations lists about 70 different families that were dispersed at the Tower of Babel event.

Interestingly today, even though there are almost 7000 languages, science is suggesting that there were about 70 original languages from which the current number has been derived.

Hmmmm.  Interesting.

You mean the Bible might really be true?

Check out this very brief 1 minute 57 second video for an explanation.

Well, it an Anthem but it is not exactly what you would expect.

How is that?

Hymn: Who am I ?

The link to our hymn today was sent to us by an old friend.

Indeed the friend is older than the Hymn.

How can that be? you ask

Well, this Hymn was written in 1965 by Rusty Goodman.

But even though it is new

its message is profound.

Drum Corps - Edinburg Military Tattoo 2012

Have you ever been to a Tattoo in Edinburg Scotland?

No, we are not speaking of tattoos like you see on the arms, legs, etc of athletes and 'ordinary' people.

The Tattoo in Edinburg is quite an event with Bagpipes, marching bands, and more.

But even if you have been to an Edinburg Tattoo

you have probably not seen this unless you have been there in the past few years.

What is it?

Well, as mentioned in the title of today's DIT

It is a Drum Corps unlike any you have probably ever seen before.

Today is Valentine's Day

Yes, today is Valentine’s day !

In America, many folks celebrate this day with Cards, Flowers, Chocolates, Jewelry, and even proposals of Marriage.

But, believe it or not, this is not just an American Holiday.

In Finland, for example, it is known as “Friend’s Day”

and in Guatemala it is known as “Day of Love and Friendship.”

The origin of Valentine’s Day is somewhat shrouded in mystery but there are several ‘theories’.

The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi Russia

Yesterday we mentioned one of the more unusual sports at the Winter Olympics.

So, continuing these thoughts about the Olympics

today let's see some pictures of Sochi, Russia where the 2014 Olympic Winter Games are being held.

Sochi is located on the Black Sea

and though Sochi is located in an area with reallllllly high snow capped mountains, it is actually somewhat tropical.

Doubtless you have seen occasional views on TV of Palm Trees as you watch these games.

In order to give us the 'big picture' of the area, NASA has provided several satellite images.

We thought you would be interested.

And as a bonus, we will also see NASA images of many of the previous Olympic sites.

So, HERE'S THE LINK to images of Sochi and other Olympic sites from space

Curling

Curling!  What is that?

Is this going to be a DIT about how to curl hair or give a permanent?

Well, no.

Curling is one of the many newer sports in the Olympic Games so you may have missed it.

While chatting recently with a DITer, this topic came up.

I had mentioned watching Curling

and the DITer was not aware of this sport.

So, we found this link to a brief video (unlike the lonnnnnng game itself)  which explains some of the rules of the sport.

Thinking you would also be interested, it is the DIT for today.

Alas, as is often the case, a commercial preceding the video begins, but, as usual, you can click it off after a few seconds.

So with that by way of introduction

Sleeping Grass

Recently some friends of DIT vacationed in Hawaii.

While there they were introduced to a very unusual plant.

What was it?

Well, its serious official name is Mimosa Pudica

But the folks in Hawaii call it "sleeping grass"

They call it this because when the leaves are touched they close together quickly as if going to sleep.

Then a few minutes later they reopen.

Hmmm.  Most amazing and unusual.

Wonder how the old earthers (evolutionists) explain this.

Did this just happen to evolve by chance ?

Or

is this another amazing and curious creation by God in which the grass is endowed with an ability to protect itself from danger.

To read about Mimosa Pudica sleeping grass and see a brief video of the leaves closing HERE'S THE LINK

This is absolutely positively amazing

What is so amazing? you ask.

Well, a friend of DIT has told us numerous times that there is a famous pilot who lives in TN that is renowned --

so famous, in fact, that at the Smithsonian Air and Space museum he is listed as the third most famous aviator in history !

Wikipedia also tells us that he is often referred to as "The Pilots' pilot."

Born in 1922, he was not only a famous pilot, he also "has personally known such great aviators as Orville Wright, Eddie Rickenbacker, Charles Lindbergh, James H. Doolittle, Jacqueline Cochran, Neil Armstrong, and Yuri Gagarin."

Wow!

And that is just a sample of the information Wikipedia provides about his life.  Be sure to read the entire Wikipedia article about Bob Hoover  HERE'S THE LINK

There are also numerous videos on YouTube that show many of his outstanding flying feats.

Perhaps one of the most amazing is the one to which we are linking today.

Why amazing?

Well, have you ever tried to keep tea in your glass or coffee in your cup while flying upside down?

And have you tried to pour tea into a glass while flying upside down.

Think it can't be done?

That was my initial thought also

but thanks to good old centripedal force it can be done.

Don't believe it?

Well, Bob Hoover did it!

And there is a video to prove it.  Prepare to be amazed.

Sunday Hymn: Wonderful Words of Life

It is Sunday and time for our weekly hymn.

Many many years ago,  when dinosaurs roamed the earth  : )

a DITer sang this hymn in a youth Choir contest.

After practicing it over and over and over and over

-- at least a zillion times--

the Choir boarded the Church bus and went to Nashville TN where they sang it in the contest.

Which Choir 'won' the contest has been long since forgotten

but the tune and the words continue to echo in the mind of the DITer.

So, it is with great joy and happy memories that we will be singing along with the hymn today.

Join us.

There is a dog who should also get kudos for saving her puppies.

1981 news

1981 was really not all that long ago -- only 33 years.

And for the 'old timers' who come to this site, it is almost like yesterday.

Most whippersnappers have no concept of how things were in that 'era'.

They live in a world now that is far far different.

Today's DIT should bring back memories for the older foks who lived in those 'I recollect' days

and open the eys of the whippersnappers who probably think the things we have now -- technology wise-- have always been as they are now.

Indeed the things that have transpired in those 33 years are astounding.

Back in 1981 we were in the early stages of the the tech advances which have snowballed to where we are now --

Snowballed so much that the wonderful innovation reported in this DIT is almost laughable even though it was 'cutting edge' technology at the time.

What was this 'cutting edge' technology?  you ask

Can you believe this?

It was Newspapers by telephone!!!

My how times have changed

If you were a bird you would see the world as

Awhile back we posted a DIT in which we vicariously flew with a parasail person who was flying with a bird.

Today we are going to think about bird's eye views again

but this time looking at many still shots of what a bird sees while flying.

How?

Well, someone has made a compendium of amazingly beautiful pictures of many locations around the world.

If you were a bird (sometimes a really high flying bird -- such as a bird that is a satellite) this is what you would see.

So, with that by way of introduction,

A very clever way to separate egg yolks

It's Heloise time again.

Heloise?   What do you mean?

Well, 'old timers' remember Heloise.

But, younger 'whippersnappers' might not.

Heloise was a person who had a zillion helpful household hints.

And she would be very proud of the one we will see today.

You may have seen this before as we posted it as a DIT many many years ago.

But you might not have been a DIT-er back then.

A friend found this link (she apparently was not a DIT-er way back then) and sent it to us.

So we figured it was time for you to see it for the first time (or for an 'again time')

Prepared to be amazed.

It's Feb 4 and tonight is the big debate

This is a reminder that tonight is the night.

Reminder?  What is happening?

Well, a few days back (Jan 31) we posted a heads up about a big debate that was going to 'happen' on Feb 4.

Well, it is now Feb 4 and this is to remind you to be sure to watch it.

The topic is

"Is creation a viable model of origins in today's modern scientific era?"

The debaters will be Bill Nye "the Science Guy" and Ken Ham, President of Answers in Genesis.

It is FREE and will be streamed LIVE on the internet at 7 PM EST

Today we are reposting the article that tells about the debate.

The link to the debate is included in the article.

How would you like to fly into this airport

Ok all you real pilots and wannabe pilots

Today's DIT is right down your alley.

What is it? you ask

It is a very beautiful, interesting, scarey approach and landing at an airport in Queenstown, New Zealand.

Personally I am not too crazy about the accompanying music but there is always the mute button or the volume down control. Feel free to use them if necessary.

But back to the topic at hand --

Those of you who fly a lot but aren't pilots may now have another reason to not look out the windows on some landings.

Also you will soon agree that it is a good thing that airplanes have instruments, GPS, and pilots who know how to fly IFR (instrument flight rules).

And now, with that by way of background and a hint about what you are about to see

HERE'S THE LINK to this is why we fly

Today is Superbowl XLVIII

Hopefully, as you read this, we have learned the Groundhog results --

though at the time this DIT was posted they were not 'in' as the groundhogs were still sleeping.

So, now it is time to consider important event number two of today which is

                         Superbowl XLVIII

XLVIII is, of course, the fancy way of saying Superbowl 48

And just in case you have just returned from Mars and don't know the details -- here they are:

              Denver Broncos (15-3) v. Seattle Seahawks (15-3)

at MetLIfe Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey

6:30 PM  EST  on Fox TV

As an aside, a friend posted on Facebook an interesting question which refers back to event one of today --

The question was "when will the movie 'Groundhog Day' be shown? -- will it be before, after, or during the Superbowl ?"

Ah, the woes of too much happening on one day.

But back to the Superbowl.

For our click through today, how about one of the many commercials that will be shown during the Superbowl game.

There is one that is probably going to be the hands down winner : "Puppy Love".

HERE"S THE LINK to "Puppy Love" the Budweiser Super Bowl XLVIII commercial

We are conflicted about the DIT for today

Why conflicted? you ask.

Well, as you have surely noticed tomorrow has two major events happening.

Two?  What are they?

Well, early in the day the famous and much awaited Groundhog day event occurs.

But later in the day another big event also happening -- the also long awaited and much anticipated Superbowl.

So we are conflicted about what to post for the DIT tomorrow.

But perhaps the solution is to consider the Groundhog event today since his prediction will happen before tomorrow's Superbowl event.

And, you can be sure that the folks in the now not so 'warm sunny south' are rooting for the Groundhog to proclaim that spring will soon be here.

They have had enough of water pipes freezing and breaking, and of snow turning to slush then immediately into ice making driving impossible because folks in the south don't have chains, spikes on tires, or the ability to salt, sand, and plow roads since snow and ice events are rare rare rare.

So, what will other groundhogs around the country have to say?

Other Groundhogs?  I thought there was only one, the famous Punxsutawney Phil.

Well, yes, he is the most famous and is the one that the classic movie features.

But there is also General Lee, the Georgia Groundhog, and I suspect the folks in Atlanta will be paying more attention to his report than Punxsutawney Phil this year.

There is even a Groundhog in Chattanooga, known as Chattanooga Chuck !! Who knew.

And since Chattanooga had the same bad weather that Atlanta had, Chattanooga Chuck should be watched as well for his prognostication.

So what is it that these and other Groundhogs are supposed to be telling us.

Bottom line and to make it short --

IF the Groundhogs see their shadow = winter will continue for 6 more weeks.

IF they do not see their shadow = winter will soon end and they leave their burrows in anticipation of the soon coming spring weather.

So, keep your eyes on the Groundhogs tomorrow morning. You can be sure the folks in the south will be.

For information about Punxsutawney Phil HERE'S THE LINK
