Surtsey Iceland and a very young island

You have heard repeatedly that it takes millions of years to form an island

or to carve a canyon such as the Grand Canyon.

But is this true?

Does it really take that long?

Well, actually no.

You already have seen the massive changes in topography produced in 1980 during the eruption of Mount St. Helens -- this was an example of how rapidly canyons, such as the Grand Canyon, can be formed.
