Remember the Day of Rest

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work:
But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God:
in it thou shalt not do any work,
thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter,
thy manservant, nor thy maidservant,
nor thy cattle,
nor thy stranger that is within thy gates.

                                                       Exodus 20:8–10 KJV

This is a well known passage from the 10 Commandments.

But what does this mean exactly?

Today's link will explain.

The Southern Alexia

Everyone has heard of Alexia --

unless you have been in a Deep Rip Van Winkle sleep.

And most people find it interesting and helpful

IF they speak in a way that Alexia can understand.

But some folks, for example, those who speak with a southern accent

may find that Alexia just doesn't understand and gives an unusual response.

Today's link gives a hilarious example of what happens when folks speak 'southern' so a Southern Alexia had to be manufactured just for them.

Machu Picchu and the Stairs of Death

Yes Yes I know we saw this picture yesterday when we had an overview of Machu Picchu.

and Yesterday we viewed a short video of Machu Picchu --

and you surely noticed the very tall and foreboding mountain in the distance.

Well, for some strange reason, many many energetic folks feel the need to climb that mountain.

Indeed I know a person who climbed it.

And remember "what goes up -- must also come down" -- which in this case looks even scarier than going up !!!

So for him and all the others who have accomplished this very scary, dangerous, and physically challenging feat, today's video will be a reminder.

For the rest of us who are too old, feeble, afraid, out of shape, or for whatever other reason you can conjure up --

Check out this video.

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is an amazing ancient ancient location in Peru.

Thought by many to have been built entirely by the Incas -- some of the work is  really much older --

and no one really knows who originally placed the different looking stones -- or when --

although, yes, it appears the Incas did build upon the foundation rocks but at a later date.

But one can easily discern the difference in building expertise.

High in the Andes, Machu Picchu is a sight to behold.

But, rather than expending all that energy to actually view it in person

and it does take a lot of energy --

today's DIT will give you a vicarious experience of its beauty

and you will not need an oxygen tank or trekking poles --

The FIFA World Cup Trophy

Well, the big FIFA World Cup event has ended --

and doubtless many of you all over the world were glued to your Television sets watching it all unfold.

And you saw the World Cup Trophy being presented to the victorious team --

BUT did you know that the team does not get to take the Trophy home with them?

No, they don't !

They get to hold it and admire it and ooh and ahh over it and and pass it around --

But then they have to return it to the FIFA folks who keep it until the next World Championship --

while the Team gets a trophy to take home that looks a lot like the 'real thing'

but it isn't the real thing!

Astounding !

Today's link will explain WHY.

So with that by way of introduction --

What did Jesus do?

"And as Moses lifted up the  serpent in the wilderness,

even so must the Son of man (Jesus) be lifted up:

That whosoever believeth in Him

should not perish, but have eternal life."

The Word was God

Yesterday we read the Verse in John 1:14 that told us that
 The Word was God.

Today let's listen to a hymn which is based on that verse and also on John 1:1-3

In the beginning was the Word,

and the Word was with God,

and the Word was God.

The same was in the beginning with God.

All things were made by Him;

and without Him was not any thing made that was made.

Do you have a hoary head?

What is a hoary head? you ask

Well the definition of 'hoary-headed' is "having the gray or white hair of advanced age"

And the origin of this term began in 1590-1600.

Hmmmmm -- imagine that -- that is shortly before the King James Bible (KJV) was printed in 1611.

Why is that significant?  Well, because the word 'hoary' is used in the KJV version of Proverbs 16:31 and it made a lot of sense to the readers then --

but now hoary is not a commonly used term and you might read that verse and wonder what it means.

So you go to a dictionary and discover that

Hoary - headed meant Gray hair in today's vernacular.

So the question now is

Do you have grey hair?

Perhaps just a few grey hairs that you are pulling out from time to time?

Or do you have a head that is actually really totally grey?

And are you worried about this?

And are you wanting to color your hair to 'hide' the grey?

Well, guess what.  A Grey (hoary) head is a good thing!

A Good thing?  what do you mean? you ask.

Well let's see what God thinks about Grey Hair in Proverbs 16:31 (in various popular Translations).

Proverbs 16:31  KJV
The Hoary (grey) head is a crown of glory,
if it be found in the way of Righteousness.

Proverbs 16:31 NIV
Grey hair is a crown of splendor:
it is attained by a righteous life

Proverbs 16:31  NAS
            A grey head is a crown of glory;
it is found in the way of righteousness

Proverbs 16:31 Amplified Bible
The Hoary head is a crown of beauty and glory,
if it is found in the way of righteousness --
of spiritual and moral rectitude in every area and relation.

Today is the 4th of July

July 4 is a very important day in the History of the United States of America.

Also known as Independence Day, it is observed with fireworks, cookouts, concerts, parades, and many many more festivities.

But, why is this day so important?

Years ago we didn’t have to ask that question.

But in recent years many facts about this day have become hazy, foggy, and even non-existent.

Bottom line answer as to why this day is important as described on Wikipedia is:

“During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the American colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia."

"After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by a Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the Declaration, finally approving it on July 4.”

So, The Declaration of Independence was signed, the Revolutionary war ensued and many lives and fortunes were lost, but ultimately the signers and patriots prevailed and the United States of America was established.

Have you ever read it?

Today, as we celebrate the 4th of July, it would be good if we all took a few minutes and read what it was that they signed.  It explains why the United States of America ‘came to be.'
